The baroque Dom Paderborn

Erzbischöfliches Diözesanmuseum Paderborn

Completed: 2020

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Peter Paul Rubens and the Baroque in the North’, Architectura Vitrtualis created a digital reconstruction that was included in the exhibition as an exhibit. It concerns the interior of Paderborn Cathedral Choir, which was destroyed in the Second World War and redesigned in the Baroque period.

The task was to visualise the interior appearance of the cathedral, which was shaped by the Baroque period, in several stages. The reconstructions of the so-called Italian dome and the baroque altars were of particular importance for the construction phases shown. The heightening of the interior in the east choir through the construction of the Italian dome also had an effect on the external appearance of the cathedral in this area. It therefore seemed sensible to reconstruct the exterior of the east choir as well. In addition to the east choir, the exterior reconstruction shows the neighbouring chapel of the Virgin Mary, the ridge turret and the northern choir extension.
